Halloweeeeeeeeeeen

This was the first basic drawing starting with the basic silhouette.

This is adding the first bits of lighting picking out all the shapes and forms of the creature.

This shot shows a close up of extra detail being added.

The final piece, I based my design around a scarecrow/skeletal creature, partially wooden, partially cloth. I looked into how rags would be ripped and would form around a scarecrow. The design here could be generally focused on either an overcast day or a brightly moonlit night. This combination gives the overall lighting you get around Autumn time in october. I left the design in black and white because I believe its helps to show a more creepy atmosphere.

Perspective practise

This was a speed painting I did, whilst looking into perspective I used this to look at how lines and objects are effected by perspective. This is also adding into the Halloween theme using a creepy castle as the source of inspiration. I looked briefly into forms of texturing such as old churches to help with lighting and making the castle look bumpy.

Trick Or Treat?

This is a simple idea of a 'trick or treat' for my Halloween assignment involving a famous figure known as 'Jason'. The idea here is to have the obviously dressed up person disguised as a trick or treater, this allows me to play around with the viewers thoughts and what they see more freely. It is focused that the person looks more into the tradition of Hallow's Eve rather than dictating on scary monsters and villains. The other idea is similar but alternative; I am to use a monster dressed up in a Halloween costume rather than having the 'monster' look scary, it is to look as its becoming part of the festivity rather than being a stereotypical monster.

Zombie Inspired Design (Halloween Concept)

This is a zombie horde that I designed based on a concept of a zombie story, this idea links with the Halloween based fear.

Halloween!!! Mood Boards

This is a simple mood board of images that had me inspired for the halloween project, it is a collection of scary and iconic images that all point in the direction of the festival spirit. This weeks brief states a halloween styled piece with a wide rang of outcomes possible. I have not only thought about the fear behind halloween but also the costume side. This has inspired my ideas to head towards an imagery of festivity included instead/aswell as just a fear factor.

This is a few concept artworks I have found that have fairly inspired me because of the effects used in lighting and perspective. I will look into this type of artwork for future inspiration when trying to create lighting on a character.

Tree Concept

This was a first approach to my tree design in which I wanted to make the tree look not only the main attraction but also fairly big and obvious. The tree in this design was way too small to create any sort of affect in any case.

This is the final piece which shows a much larger tree scale is almost reaching out to the other mountains. The effect I was trying to pursue is to create a foreground, mid ground, and fait background. In this the foreground is the focal point in which the tree is sprout. I was originally trying to make the massive tree look as if its hanging of the edge of a mountain but in this it looks about average size. The view in this is to make the viewer try and imagine how what the tree's purpose of being there is other than becoming part of the view of the mountainside.

Tree Sketch

This is a simple sketch I created of a tree showing a heavy shadow in the darken areas, this shows the light coming in from the top. This gives a simple idea of how shadows bend around a tree/branch surface.

Bark images

These are a few close ups of bark I took pictures of as for use of inspiration for the tree project. These can be used for textures and also a source to see how bark looks as a closer design.

Tree Mood Board

Ok so the project for this week is to create a tree with character but not a tree character which means having to look into how a tree creates an effect weather that is scary, happy, sad etc. I think it is going to be difficult to get the right feel towards it as there is a fine line between creating a tree character and a tree that gives a certain feel. This is a mood board of images that may inspire me when I am to desing my own tree concept. Some of the scenes are used in games and complement the characters of a game rather than being their for show.

Fatties!

A screenshot of the basic shapes I started with I did a rough sketch just to mark out my idea, I then went over in a silhouette. I then went onto doing the greyscale which involved picking out the light and dark areas I found it difficult to make someone look fat; adding folds etc.

After the greyscale was done I focused onto the colour which I decided on using colours that are uncommon to see on the human body. I feel as if the light and the colour on the mouth piece here works really well.

A few more tweaks such as lowering the opacity of the colour as I thought it looked too vibrant to show light and shade. I also added a misty floor as if they lived in a dusty landscape with flying creatures in the background.

The characters themselves were drawn upon an imagination from when I've seen people using folds in their body along with nipples as eyes to create a face. I would say this follows closely to that image. Realistically I think that the woman has more of a realistic human body form whereas the male looks a bit boxy. Although I prefer how the mouth looks on the male I believe the perspective is shown well and looks like a convincing mouth. These surrealistic characters could exist on another planet in which their mouths are on their stomach.

My surreal sketches

This idea was based on a more darken style of drawing and it also includes a bit of religious fear within the mix. I feel as if creating something not only surreal and strange but also weird and freaky can be viewed to also startle the viewer.

This is an idea in which a the whole arm of a person is being forcefully ripped apart. In this scene it almost looks as if the skin is being pulled straight from the bone.

A more cartoony kind of drawing in which also becomes creepy because of the size variations. This image slightly look like it could a dream and the dreamer (the person being lifted) is experiencing some surreal nightmare.

This is another sketch I created relating to surrealism in which to characters don't have mouths on their faces but do on their torsos. I kind of got the inspiration from paintings in which a lot of fat people are being represented in. Mixing this with a simple surreal idea of switching the mouth positions around.

Surreal Mood Boards

This is a source of insparation from some surreal images that looked interesting as landscape style pieces of art. These will be looked at into when I design my surreal assainment.

I liked the idea of a demonic/creapy style of surreal, this is another option for my surreal design. Some of these desgins remind me more of concept art that may be included in a film.

I quite liked these desings as they were simply a form of surreal transformation. I like how it mixes photography and real life images with effects produced by the artist.

Colossus!

I started my design off by creating a mid tonal grey background and lining things up in perspective using basic guides I drew. I found it easier in this sense to use a dark grey instead of a black as a line for the outsides.

I like how the Robot in this perspective shows a greatened hight and I believe I have shown the creature's weight as to be fairly heavy. I have created to different light sources including a faint light from the eye as well as skylight. I am happy with the outcome as I believe I have met the briefs' standards and with a twist of my style.

More Sketches

This is an idea I had of the robot's perspective designed and represented as a cartoon.

This is an example of transformation: showing how a gun can become transformed through components like gears.

In this I looked into how robots stand, I realised that the feet/platforms tend to be flat and not floating there. I also realised that they need to look heavy. I would present this by showing the use of big pistons to allow to lift these heavy objects.

Perspective drawing

I drew this to understand the perspective of a robot and also to get a greater understanding of a robots armour. This image is inspired by Starscream which is a Decepticon from transformers.

Robotic Mood Board

Just a few samples of images of parts of robots/robotic material, I looked into mostly how the armour is presented and shaped around the body. I also looked at weak points in the robots body as well as weight distributions of the robot stances. I noticed that tend to have big knees or shin joints to hold the massive weight that it supports.

Tentacle Monster

This is a screenshot of a view. The layers are a good indicator of how you can create a 3D effect out of different brush stroke effects. This also helped me to create a darkened area around the picture to make it look more like a scene rather than a rectangular picture.

The process for creating this piece was very complex as I had a few ideas in my head and I tried to put all the ideas together which didn't work. So using my mood board for further inspiration I liked how the tentacles were creeping towards the screen or a possible victim, so I based my idea around the theme of fear towards the creature behind the tentacles. I had the ends of the tentacles head towards the main focal point as a source of 'leading lines'. I added the mouth of the creature in to show more of what it may look like.

I believe that leaving this image as a silhouette allows the viewer to use their own imagination of what the creature may look like. I decided not to use colour on the creature as I thought it would take the focus away from the middle of the image. The black and white effect was also inspired by the game "Limbo".

I'm happy with the final outcome as it gives a sense of a 3D space as well as a creepy atmosphere of a creature hidden within darkness ready to make a move upon the wandering traveler in the thickness of the fog.

Tentacle Sketches

This is a study I did of how tentacles move/reacts.

This is a design idea of having a page full of tentacles coming towards the focal point.

A design of tentacles about to take action.

A close up of how a tentacle may when I put details in the design.
