I quite liked the design of the helicarrier from the avengers movie, I believe the design and concept makes it a believable ship that would take flight.
I looked at conceptships.blogspot.com for more inspirational images.
I quite liked the idea of the smoothness and having propeller type wings, so I produced some designs that would relate to that style.
I then decided to base my ship in the style of the manta ray.
I then looked into styles of other fish-type flying machines.
Some sketches looking into how the ship would indicate 'manta ray'.
I then looked into the functionality how the wings work, I decided that I really wanted to go with the idea of the propeller type wings but the design would not fit into the style and shape of the manta ray. To get past this and after much thought, I recreated a way of keeping its slimline and style of the slim shaped fish by allowing a different mode in which the ship can go from take off to glide/flying mode.
I then wanted to see more into how it would look in perspective and how the parts would fit together i.e. use of hinges and pistons.
The finished piece, most parts are just indicated by circles for the fans and cylinders for the hinges.
A 3-way perspective of the ship (top/behind, behind/bottom, and a view if you was to view it in a game scenario i.e. first person).
